No Fear Painting Workshop at Long Island’s Historic Peconic Art Colony

October 18 – 20, 2019

Join Mary at the Historic Peconic Art Colony in picturesque Peconic, NY on the North Fork of Long Island, home to beautiful beaches and world-class vineyards.

Mary is the resident artist and instructor for a weekend-long plein-air painting workshop on a private secluded beach on one of the eastern-most points of Long Island. Peconic was the site of an important art colony starting in the early 1900s when Henry and Edith Prellwitz made it their year-round home, along with other established New York City artists. Instruction will be held at the historic Prellwitz house and studio. The area is also home to delightful vineyards, farms, classic lighthouses, and fresh seafood. The workshop is limited to 10 participants.

Study the landscape by applying the fundamental concepts and techniques of plein-air painting. We choose our subject by squinting to see the large mass, the “value” and its design graphically. Working with the mass, or, spots of color, one next to the other, we will allow ourselves to study color, atmosphere, and composition without getting caught up in the literalness of the subject or its details. Working quickly trains us to keep pace with the ever-changing landscape, to trust our instincts, and to be spontaneous. Working together, we will create paintings that are honest and fresh. Please come prepared with a plein air easel and the limited palette listed in my material list. The limited palette suggested is perfect warm/cool choices of the primary colors whether you are a beginner or novice painter. Feel free to bring your favorite painting materials as well, as familiarity is important.
